The importance of the English language today is no longer news to anyone. Living in a globalized and highly connected world makes the ability to communicate in different languages increasingly valuable. English, in particular, has become the international standard of communication. Today, fluency in English is not simply an advantage, but a requirement.Likewise, experts widely agree that the earlier exposure to a language begins, the easier it is to learn. A broad range of studies shows that bilingual children develop stronger cognitive and communication skills, beyond simply mastering two languages. The earlier a language is learned, the more effective its acquisition becomes, not only in terms of understanding grammar structures, but especially in constructing meaning and purpose in its use. More than internalizing rules, students must truly appropriate the language. For this to happen, meaningful stimulation is essential. The significant opportunities a child has to engage with a language make learning rich and lasting. For this reason, Brazilian International School promotes bilingual education from the very beginning of a child’s academic journey, integrated with overall child development.Throughout basic education, students experience English in diverse contexts, becoming familiar with the language in everyday situations, not only during designated “English classes.” Instead of simply teaching English as a subject, bilingual education uses English as a medium of instruction, just as Portuguese is used. This natural bilingualism is encouraged from Early Childhood Education, when children are invited to use English in daily communication, interaction, play, and learning. They acquire the language while discovering and understanding the world around them. The language becomes a tool for learning rather than just a subject.English instruction at the school values children’s natural curiosity and expressive language development, hallmarks of early childhood. When encouraged to think in both English and Portuguese, children naturally explore communicative possibilities, expand vocabulary, and build confidence.Bilingual education as a pedagogical approach is especially powerful because it supports the development of a strong cultural foundation aligned with the needs of a connected, ethical, and just society. Through experiences in both languages, students not only achieve fluency but also gain exposure to two cultures. This exposure strengthens their ability to recognize that people may perceive the world from different perspectives. Through contact with different ways of thinking and constant language selection depending on context, bilingual children develop adaptability and empathy. One of the school’s primary goals is to provide broad and global citizenship education that promotes respect for social and cultural diversity. Students are encouraged to understand their contexts and act within them to create positive impact.Beyond increasing professional opportunities and facilitating the learning of additional languages, bilingualism prepares children and adolescents to engage with diverse peoples and cultures, seeing the world through multiple perspectives. While school is not the only place where this ability can develop, it is where such experiences can be intentionally guided. Educators carefully design learning experiences that promote reflection and meaningful engagement with sociocultural diversity. How does the school foster this type of learning? How do teachers transform bilingual education into an opportunity to explore, discuss, and experience global diversity? This topic was addressed in a conversation with bilingual education specialist Antonieta Megale on August 14, as part of the event “Where It All Begins: School and Family at the Center of Child Development,” organized by Bahema Educação and Centro de Formação da Vila, featuring contributions from other schools in the group.
