How to build an effective study routine for college entrance exams

Success in college entrance exams begins with early preparation, discipline, and emotional balance.

Success in college entrance exams begins with early preparation, discipline, and emotional balance. A structured study routine, combined with social-emotional development and consistent practice.

High School is a decisive stage, not only because it concludes Basic Education, but also because it marks the first major choice of adult life: choosing a career and shaping the future.

As the end of the year approaches, so does the college entrance exam season, bringing high expectations and emotional stress. Preparing for university requires discipline, time management, and organization, all of which make this period more manageable. Whether studying individually or in groups, dedication and planning are essential elements in the routine of any college applicant.

To succeed in college entrance exams or Brazil’s National High School Exam (ENEM), preparation must begin early, with consistent study throughout previous years. A strong academic foundation built in ninth grade and during the first two years of High School, combined with thorough review in the senior year, creates a pathway to success. Without this preparation, students may feel they should have dedicated more time to their studies.

The ideal approach is to start early while avoiding excessive anxiety. At the beginning of freshman year, it is natural for students not to yet master content that will only appear later in High School.

Academic knowledge in all subjects is essential. However, understanding the specific structure of each entrance exam and university admissions process can also provide a significant advantage. Practice exams and simulations of major public and private university tests are critical components of preparation.

Beyond academic content, developing social-emotional skills is increasingly important. Students must learn to manage emotions, set goals, and make responsible decisions. This development leads to meaningful academic, behavioral, emotional, social, and cognitive growth.

Creating and maintaining an effective study routine is essential for strong exam preparation. More important than creating the routine is being able to follow it consistently. The routine must align with the student’s lifestyle and personal profile. Otherwise, it will likely be abandoned before achieving success.

Here are some practical tips for building an effective study routine:

  • Analyze previous exams and official guidelines: Universities publish exam rules, required readings, subject outlines, and instructions months in advance. Study the exam format, question distribution, and time management strategies.
  • Be disciplined: Do not wait for motivation to study. Motivation may fade at the first difficulty. Success comes from structured plans followed with discipline.
  • Organize your study schedule: Dedicate specific hours daily to focused study. Prioritize current classroom topics to strengthen foundational knowledge before advancing to more complex material. Take notes, review consistently, and complete practice exercises.
  • Prioritize challenging subjects: Spend extra time on subjects you find difficult. Seek additional materials and alternative resources if textbooks become monotonous.
  • Study with friends when appropriate: Group study can encourage collaboration and reinforce learning. Teaching others strengthens understanding. If studying alone, record yourself explaining concepts and listen to reinforce learning.
  • Stay informed: Current events are often included in entrance exams and ENEM essays. Stay updated on major news topics.
  • Practice essay writing: Essays often carry significant weight in admissions processes. Practice writing within time limits and develop strong argumentation skills.
  • Take care of your health: Academic performance depends on physical and mental well-being. Take breaks, eat well, exercise, relax, and maintain balance, especially as exams approach.

At Brazilian International School, students begin preparing as early as ninth grade. Through regular ENEM and entrance exam simulations, they develop confidence and readiness to approach exams calmly and successfully.

The school prepares high-performing students for both Brazilian universities and international institutions. Experienced teachers emphasize not only academic excellence but also social-emotional development and the joy of learning. The curriculum encourages self-awareness, ethical decision-making, resilience, confidence, and overall well-being.
